El testarudo detective John McClane (Bruce Willis) vuelve a las andanzas, cuando una organización terrorista basada en la Internet amenaza con hacer la vida imposible en Estados Unidos, encabezada por Thomas Gabriel (Timothy Olyphant). No sólo eso, sino que le secuestran a su hija Lucy (Mary Elizabeth Winstead). Y para colmo, debe recurrir a un joven hacker, Matt Farrell (Justin Long).
